Margin Reporting
Revenue per impression, cost per impression, net margin per impression, and net margin on ad spend by placement and partner.
Margin reporting shows what each impression earned after cost. It also shows what each dollar of partner spend returned in net margin. Retailers and brands use it to price every placement to margin rather than to CPM.
This capability arrives as a proposal when your network needs it, filled in from your brand context, and goes live when you confirm it. It's part of Octo, and Margin reporting: revenue per impression and net margin on ad spend defines each measure.
When to use it
Use it on commerce and retail models. Margin reporting is partial on the Commerce Media model and full on Retail Media, as Network models in depth shows.
| Decision | How margin reporting helps |
|---|---|
| Setting floors | You set floors per placement to a target net margin, and BCC proposes floors from this report |
| Renewing partners | You rank partners and packages by net margin on ad spend |
| Pricing packages | The Pricer agent in Canvas moves floors and package prices with margin |
| Proving outcomes | Net margin on ad spend is reported against each package's forecast |
How it works
- Revenue and attribution are joined on the Hierarchical Grid, so every measure rolls up by placement, page type, property, and network.
- Revenue comes from Revenue reporting, payouts, and the Creator Wallet. Attributed sales come from Attribution Models.
- Margin inputs, such as product margin and cost of goods, come from your catalog or a margin file.
- Retail attributed revenue (RAR) counts the sales attributed to a package within its window.
- Exports go to CSV and to scheduled reports for finance.
Set it up
Octo proposes margin reporting with these steps already done. You review the result and confirm it.
- Upload margin inputs with the catalog or a margin file. Learn how to connect a catalog in Connect your website, app, and podcast feed.
- Open Reports > Margin.
- Set floors to your target margin. Learn how in Floor Pricing and Yield Rules.
Settings
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Margin inputs | Product margin and cost of goods, from your catalog or a margin file |
| Cost inputs | The costs subtracted from revenue to get net margin per impression |
Upload a margin file under Audiences > Conversions, or send margin fields with your catalog. Floors that follow margin are set in Floor Pricing and Yield Rules.
What it reports
Reports > Margin shows every measure along the grid and by partner. Margin reporting: revenue per impression and net margin on ad spend explains how each is built.
- Revenue per impression: all revenue attributed to the impression, from ads, packages, and commerce, divided by impressions.
- Cost per impression: serving where metered, revenue shares paid out, creator shares, and partner shares.
- Net margin per impression: revenue per impression minus cost per impression.
- Net margin on ad spend: for a partner's package, the gross margin on attributed sales minus the partner's spend, divided by spend.
- Retail attributed revenue (RAR): sales attributed to the package within the window.
