Vertical Video Player Placement
A 9:16 swipe feed of Shorts ranked for the page and the viewer, the default placement for content pages and mobile.
The Vertical Video Player renders the Shorts experience inside a placement. Viewers swipe through full-height clips, the way they do in a social feed. Maya, Genuin's relevance engine, ranks each clip for the page's context and for what that viewer watched before.
This capability arrives as a proposal when your network needs it, filled in from your brand context, and goes live when you confirm it. It's part of Onsite, and Player experiences compares it with the other players.
When to use it
Use it on any page where the reader's next action is to keep watching. That covers article and episode pages, homepages, and app feeds. For product pages, use the Shoppable Carousel instead.
| Page type | Where it goes | Pair it with |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | Below the first fold, full width | Shoppable Carousel |
| Article or episode page | After the third paragraph, or at the end | Nothing; Shorts alone matches reading intent |
| Search with no results | At the top | Nothing; it keeps the session alive |
| App home feed | The main feed | Community Wall |
How it works
- The placement sits on a page type in your Hierarchical Grid, sized 9:16 fluid or 320 × 480.
- The page sends its context, such as a category, products, or topics. Context narrows what the page type already covers. It never widens it.
- Maya ranks clips for that context and for the viewer's history. With auto login on, Contextual Continuity carries the session from page to page.
- Shorts support captions, follow, share, and in-feed Paid Partner Posts.
- A placement can allow more than one experience, and Maya picks between them for each viewer. Switching the experience never changes the embed snippet.
Set it up
Octo proposes the placement with these steps already done. You review the result and confirm it.
- Register a placement on the page type, sized 9:16 fluid or 320 × 480. Learn how in Register your placements on the Hierarchical Grid.
- Allow the Shorts experience on the placement. Learn how in Pick your first player experience.
- Add the placement to your page and send the page's context, so Maya ranks for each page. Learn how in Deliver contextual feeds with page, user, and location context.
Settings
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Player | Vertical |
| Layout | Feed |
| Autoplay | On, muted |
| Captions | Automatic |
Change these per page type or per placement in Player Controls and Feed Settings, without code. In the Web SDK, the layout comes from the placement's style in Brand Control Center, so a layout change needs no change to your site.
What it reports
Reports > Onsite shows these metrics for each placement. Measure engagement explains how each one is counted.
- Watch time per user per minute: the engagement metric Maya is measured on.
- Completion: the share of clips watched to the end.
- Swipe depth: how many clips a viewer moves through in one visit.
- Follows: viewers who follow a creator or group from the feed.
- Lift: the change against the placement's holdout, set in Placement Experiments and Holdouts.
Add it to your site
The Web SDK renders this placement today. Add a Genuin placement to your website covers the placement and style IDs, and Embed the Genuin Web SDK on your website covers loading the script. Customize the Genuin video player sets sizes, tile layouts, and the profile menu.
The placement calls in the Business Account API are proposed, not live. Live API today and the Business Account API roadmap maps what you can call now to what's planned.
