Player Controls and Feed Settings
Autoplay, sound, captions, share and follow buttons, comment visibility, sticky player, and Maya's parameters, set per platform, page type, or placement without code.
Player controls set how the player behaves on a page. Feed settings set the parameters Maya, Genuin's orchestrator, uses to rank each feed. You change both in your Business Account, without a code change.
Octo, Genuin's Supervised Intelligence interface in your Business Account, proposes this capability when it finds a fit on your sites and apps. It completes the steps under Set it up from your brand context. Nothing goes live until you approve it. It's part of Control, and Personalization and relevance: how Maya ranks every feed explains the signals Maya ranks with and the parameters you control.
When to use it
Use it any time, because changes apply without a code change or redeploy. Before you change a placement's feed settings, run an experiment so you can measure the change as lift. Several placements take their options from here:
| Placement | What you set here |
|---|---|
| Horizontal Video Player Placement | Carousel or inline layout per page type |
| Audio + Video Dynamic Player | Audio-first or video-first default per page type |
| Keywords Player | Minimum match score and maximum players per page |
| Community Wall Placement | Comment visibility and reactions |
| Sticky Mini-Player | The mini-player on or off per page type |
| Contextual Continuity | Repeat window and continuity weight |
How it works
- You set player defaults per platform, Mobile or Web, and each placement can override some of them in its own configuration.
- Maya ranks from placement and page context, group and topic, session continuity, audience cohorts, and brand and partner rules. Feed settings are the parameters you control on top of those signals.
- Maya is measured on per-minute watch time per user and per-minute revenue.
- In a network of publishers, each publisher's placements inherit the house defaults unless their brand overrides them.
Set it up
Octo proposes the settings with these steps already done. You review the result and confirm it.
- Open Control > Feed settings or Settings > Player Controls.
- Set the Mobile and Web defaults, then override some options per placement under Grow > On Site > Placement where needed.
- Options set in code override both. The Embed configuration reference shows what each SDK accepts.
Settings
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Exploration rate | How often Maya tests new or low-data videos |
| Freshness | Preference for recent content |
| Repeat window | Minimum time before a viewer sees the same video again |
| Pinned slots | Fixed positions for brand or partner content |
| Cohort use | Which connected cohorts Maya can use on this placement |
| Paid pacing | Maximum share of Paid Partner Posts per session |
| Player toggles | Video Aspect Ratio, Video Autoplay, Video starts with sound on, Video Play in Feed, Resume Playback Settings, Tap Behavior, In-Feed Reaction, Playback speed, and Enable Share Caption, plus follow buttons, comment visibility, and sticky player. Share and engagement toggles live in each placement's and embed's settings |
Feed settings hold the first six, and they apply per page type or per placement. Player Controls hold the toggles for the whole brand, set separately for Mobile and Web. Each placement can override some player options in its own configuration.
Player Controls in Business Account
Player settings live under Settings > Player Controls. The page is titled Player & Feed Controls and shows a live preview of the player. You set Mobile and Web separately.
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Video Aspect Ratio | 9:16 (Vertical), the default. Adaptive and Allow consumer to manage controls are coming soon. |
| Video Autoplay | Always, Never, or Custom, which waits 1 to 5 seconds before the video plays |
| Video starts with sound on | Whether audio is on when a video starts. Mobile only. |
| Video Play in Feed | Video Loop repeats a video Infinite, 10, 5, or 2 times. Auto Swipe moves to the next video after 1 to 5 repeats. |
| Resume Playback Settings | Where a video resumes when a viewer scrolls back: Last 5 seconds, Last 3 seconds, Beginning, or Exact point left off |
| Tap Behavior | Tap to Mute/Unmute or Tap to Play/Pause |
| In-Feed Reaction | Spark, Like, Thumbs Up, Laugh, Support, or Custom, which you request from support |
| Playback Speed | Lets viewers watch at 2x speed |
| Enable Share Caption | Lets viewers see and share captions |
On Web, the tap setting is called Click/Tap Behavior. It adds Tap to Unmute / Play/Pause: the first tap unmutes a muted video, and later taps play or pause.
Save stays disabled until you change something. Switching between Mobile and Web with unsaved changes asks you to confirm, and continuing discards those changes.
Player options per placement
Each placement has its own player options, set in its configuration under Grow > On Site > Placement:
- Media Play settings in the Configure View tab: Autoplay Video, Auto-Advance Playback with a 3-second default delay, and Loop Video.
- Adaptive Video Display: when it's on, videos fit the screen size. When it's off, they keep a fixed 9:16 ratio.
- Feed Scrolling Behavior, for the Feed layout only: Free Scroll or Single Video Swipe.
- Engagement Details in the Expand View tab, with separate toggles for Repost, Reaction, Comment, Share, and Intelligence.
- Enable Redirection, Enable Report, and Show Linkouts, also in Expand View.
Embeds carry a similar set, including Feed Display Preference, which offers Default and Pinned Post First and starts on Default.
What it reports
The Relevance dashboard shows the effect of each change against the placement's standing holdout. Reading the Relevance dashboard explains how each tier is read.
- Relevance: match score, exploration share, and repeat rate.
- Engagement: watch time per user per minute, completion, and follows.
- Lift: watch time against the holdout, set in Placement Experiments and Holdouts.
Add it to your site
The Web SDK renders the placements these settings shape. Add a Genuin placement to your website covers the placement and style IDs, and Embed the Genuin Web SDK on your website covers loading the script. Customize the Genuin video player sets size, tile layout, profile menu, and deep links in code on every SDK. It notes that a Player Controls change can take up to 15 minutes to reach views. Add moderators to a community gives accounts the moderator role in the communities your player draws from.
The placement settings calls in the Business Account API are proposed, not live. Live API today and the Business Account API roadmap maps what you can call now to what's planned.
