Configure vertical video ad placements and frequency
Set where vertical video ads appear in feeds and embeds, how often they repeat, and which ad types serve first, using monetization presets in Brand Control Center.
Vertical video ads run as cards in your vertical feeds and inside video playback. In Brand Control Center (BCC), you control them through Monetization Presets: each preset sets where ads appear, how they're spaced, and which ad types serve first.
Spacing is the main lever. Ads that come too often cause drop-offs and lower engagement, while well-spaced ads keep revenue steady. For the full preset reference, see Configure ad monetization with presets. Presets are part of Control.
Choose a preset
- In BCC, go to Settings > Ad Configuration. All ad placement and frequency settings live here, in Monetization Presets.
- Choose an existing preset, such as Balanced or Aggressive, or click + New Preset to create a custom configuration.
Use separate presets to run different monetization strategies on different placements.
Select placements and embeds
In the preset, select where vertical video ads can appear:
- Brand feed
- Community feeds
- Group feeds
- Embedded players
Ads appear only where both conditions are true: the preset is assigned, and the placement or embed is selected.
Set in-feed ad spacing
Turn on In-Feed Configuration, then set two values for the vertical video cards in a feed:
| Setting | What it controls | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Start Slot | The position of the first ad in the feed. For example, 2 means the second card. | 1–10 |
| Repeat Frequency | How often ads repeat after the first one | 1–10 |
Genuin places ads at Start Slot + (Repeat × N). For example, with Start Slot 2 and Repeat Frequency 4, ads appear at positions 2, 6, 10, 14, and so on.
Set ad types and priority
- Turn on the vertical video ad formats you want: Video Ads (programmatic) and, if you use vertical video content for sponsorships, Sponsored Post.
- Drag and drop the ad types to set their priority. Higher priority serves first, and lower priority is the fallback.
Set in-stream ad frequency
Turn on In-Stream Ads to run ads within video playback, then set:
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Start Content Video | Which video triggers the first in-stream ad |
| Repeat Frequency | The interval for later in-stream ads |
For example, with Start Content Video 2 and Repeat Frequency 2, ads trigger on videos 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on.
Then choose the positions: Pre-roll (before the video), Mid-roll (during the video), or Post-roll (after the video).
In-feed and in-stream ads have separate frequency controls. Frequency settings apply to all ad types.
Set ad experience controls
These controls set how vertical ads behave. We recommend the following values for vertical feeds:
| Control | Recommended setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ad Aspect Ratio | Match video player ratio | Keeps ads vertical, at 9:16 |
| Mute on Start | On | A better experience in the feed |
| Duration | On | Shows viewers how long the ad runs |
Preview, save, and assign the preset
- Use the real-time preview panel to see ad positions in slots 1–15, check spacing and density, and validate the experience before you save.
- Click Save.
- Assign the preset to placements and embeds.
Ads then render according to the frequency and placement rules you set. You can assign a different preset to each placement or embed.
To use different frequencies on different platforms, use Custom Environment Settings to define platform-specific configurations.
How Genuin serves vertical video ads
| Rule | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Placement dependency | Ads render only on assigned placements |
| Environment targeting | Ads show only on the selected platforms: Web, iOS, Android, or Mobile Web |
| Priority-based serving | The highest-priority ad type serves first |
| In-stream dependency | In-stream ads trigger only on the configured videos |
| Fallback | House content shows when no ad fills |
| No fill | The slot collapses or shows fallback content |
When no ad is available for a slot, the SDK tries the next ad type, then falls back to house content, and otherwise removes the slot. Learn how to set up fallback content in Mark and manage house ads.
Example setups
| Setup | Start Slot | Repeat Frequency | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 3 | 5 | Ads spaced evenly, with minimal disruption |
| High revenue (Aggressive) | 2 | 2 | Frequent ads: more monetization, and more ad fatigue |
| Premium experience | 5 | 6 | A content-first experience with limited ads |
Raise the frequency when engagement is high. Lower it when you want a premium experience.
Limitations
- Start Slot and Repeat Frequency: each accepts a value from 1 to 10.
- Preview: the preview panel shows the first 15 positions only.
