Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, speaking during the Lok Sabha debate on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, questioned the relevance of holding an extended discussion on the national song and suggested that the government was attempting to divert attention from pressing national issues. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s past remarks listing alleged insults from the Opposition, she advised him to similarly list his complaints against Jawaharlal Nehru and hold a detailed debate on that subject as well. Priyanka noted that despite multiple recent tragedies and the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, essential concerns were being sidelined. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi opened the debate by highlighting the historical significance of Vande Mataram, criticising the Congress for what he termed compromising on the song in the past. He said the composition was created when British authorities tried to impose “God Save the Queen,” describing it as both a freedom anthem and a call to end colonial influence.
