Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised the need for a discussion on Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha, saying the government was attempting to divert attention from real issues, including recent deaths in the country and the upcoming West Bengal Assembly polls. She also asserted that the Congress would continue to fight the BJP and its ideology despite electoral setbacks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who opened the debate marking 150 years of Vande Mataram, alleged that the Congress had “compromised” on the national song in the past and “bowed to the Muslim League”. He said the song was written when the British were trying to impose “God Save the Queen” and described it as a sacred call to free India from colonial remnants.
