Anoushka Shankar has publicly criticised Air India after discovering substantial damage to her sitar following a recent flight. The internationally acclaimed musician said she was “shocked” and “deeply disappointed” by what she described as severe mishandling of her instrument. In an emotional video shared on Instagram, Shankar recounted the moment she realised something was wrong, initially noticing that her sitar was unusually out of tune. After attempting to tune it, she picked it up to play and discovered the extent of the damage. Expressing disbelief, she asked, “How on earth does damage like this happen?” Shankar noted that this was her first time flying with Air India in many years and emphasised that nothing like this had occurred to her instrument in the last 15 to 17 years. She added that despite using special protective cases and paying handling fees, the airline had failed to keep her sitar safe.
