The government has withdrawn its order mandating that all smartphone manufacturers pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on devices, following strong public and industry backlash. The original directive, issued on November 28 by the Department of Telecommunications, required the app to be preloaded on new smartphones and pushed to existing devices through software updates, without the option to disable or remove it. After criticism over privacy, user consent, and the scope of enforcement, the Ministry of Communications issued a statement revoking the mandate. While addressing concerns, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the app was intended only as a safety tool for users and emphasised that “neither is snooping possible, nor will it be done.” He also stated that users “can delete it if they want,” clarifying that installation will remain voluntary. The rollback marks a significant policy correction amid growing scrutiny of digital privacy and user rights.
