Chief Justice of India Surya Kant expressed concern over Delhi’s severe air pollution, noting that a 55-minute morning walk left him experiencing discomfort and breathing issues until the next day. His remarks came during court proceedings where senior advocates also highlighted the health impact of the city’s hazardous air quality. Rakesh Dwivedi sought exemption from appearing physically due to pollution-related complications, while Kapil Sibal stated that he had stopped his daily walks altogether. In response to these concerns, the Supreme Court is considering a request from the Bar to temporarily shift proceedings to a fully virtual format. The proposal aims to reduce exposure to toxic air levels while ensuring continuity of judicial functioning amid persistently poor air quality in the capital.
