Justice Surya Kant was on Monday administered oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He has succeeded Justice B. R. Gavai, who demitted office on November 23. Justice Kant will remain in office until February 9, 2027. Notably, Justice Kant’s tenure will be relatively long, giving his bench an extended window to adjudicate several high-profile constitutional and social matters. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narender Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel of India H D Kumaraswamy, Minister of Health and Family Affairs J P Nadda, Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh and Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, among other prominent central ministers and figures, were in attendance during the ceremony.
