“Women’s reservation should be implemented on current strength of Lok Sabha (543); it must not be linked to delimitation." Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi today (April 16) said in Parliament that Centre intends to carry out the delimitation process in the country under the guise of women's reservation. "This bill is not for women's reservation, but it is for delimitation through the backdoor," he said. Referring to Article 81, he said the Constitution links seat redistribution to the next Census, expected after 2026, but the government was seeking to move ahead without waiting. The govt plans to implement the women's reservation ahead of the 2029 General Elections by bringing in an amendment to the 2023 Act and a constitutional amendment to delink the delimitation process from the 2027 census.
