The Women's Reservation Bill implementation was officially initiated today (April 16) as Govt introduced the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. This new legislation aims to fast-track the 33% quota for women so it can be operationalised by the 2029 General Elections. The Bill proposes delinking the reservation from the 2027 Census requirement, instead utilising 2011 Census figures for an immediate delimitation exercise. To accommodate this reservation, the govt tabled a plan to expand the Lok Sabha's total strength from 543 to approximately 816–850 seats. Under this 33% formula, roughly 272 to 283 seats would be reserved for women. Following a division vote of 251 in favour and 185 against, the House successfully introduced the legislative package, with a final vote on the passage of the Bills scheduled for 4:00 PM on Friday, 17 April 2026.
