#worldchimpanzeeday brings me back to this moment I witnessed the incredible trust this chimp had for Dr. Rebeca @atenciarebeca at @janegoodallinst Congo. FYI the easiest & least costly way you can actually help wild chimpanzees is to be smart here on IG and all social apps when you see chimps depicted as pets ie wearing human clothes, taking a bath, playing with dogs/cats/people, playing on a phone, wearing a birthday hat & eating birthday cake etc. Choose NOT to engage with that content bc it literally drives the poaching of wild chimps. Yes, sounds crazy, but it’s true. When chimps (and many other wildlife species) look like pets and these pics/videos have high engagement & likes & shared & comments like “omg so cute” or “I want one!” it actually encourages poaching wild chimps AKA killing entire groups and taking only the babies alive to be sent into the illegal wildlife trade. 10-20+ chimps are killed for every baby stolen from the wild and only 10-20% of those babies survive the horrible aftermath before or along the route to the middle east and eventually China/SE Asia. For every single baby taken from the wild 100’s of chimps lose their lives. Please let others know to avoid social media content where wildlife looks like pets. It doesn’t do their wild counterparts any favors even if the likes & comments come from good intentions. #jgicongo 💚
