Two fruit vendors were arrested in Malad on Wednesday (Feb 25), after they were allegedly caught applying rat poison on fruits before sale, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to launch an inspection drive across local markets. The accused, identified as Manoj Sangamlal Kesarwani (42) and Rahul Sadanlal Kesarwani (25), both residents of Rajanpada in Malad West, were produced before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Borivali. The action followed a viral video on X that showed patches of a substance labelled ‘Ratol’ applied across a fruit stall. While the vendors claimed the chemical was used to prevent rats from eating the fruits at night, the footage triggered health concerns and was widely circulated on WhatsApp. After a complaint was filed with the Malad police, an FIR was registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and a bottle of the substance was seized from the spot. The BMC’s P/North ward office also removed the stall on New Link Road and began a ground survey to inspect raw items sold by vegetable and fruit vendors in the area.
