Parliament Session | Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra delivered a sharp speech in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla, raising constitutional and procedural concerns. Moitra said the Constitution mandates that the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker be filled as soon as they fall vacant, but pointed out that there is currently no Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha. She also criticised the process of the debate, saying the House’s consensus was not taken on who should preside over the proceedings on the motion. The TMC MP alleged that Om Birla presided over the largest mass suspension of MPs in the history of the Indian Parliament, claiming the episode accounted for over 40% of all Lok Sabha suspensions since 2004.
