One and a half hours into the counting for the 140-member Kerala Assembly, the Congress-led UDF has surged past the magic number of 71, leading in a staggering 89 seats. The Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF, which was eyeing an unprecedented third consecutive term, is currently trailing with leads in just 44 seats. While the Left was hoping to break the state’s historical pattern with a third consecutive term, anti-incumbency appears to be favoring the UDF across traditional strongholds and beyond. However, the race isn’t without its shocks; the UDF’s chief ministerial contender, VD Satheesan, is currently trailing in North Paravoor, where CPI(M)’s E T Tyson has taken a slim lead of over two hundred and forty votes.
