Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, speaking during the debate, traced the origins of women’s reservation to Motilal Nehru, while questioning the BJP’s stance on the issue. Referring to the Prime Minister’s address, she said that the opposition faced during the introduction of reservation in Panchayats and pointed to what she described as a shift in narrative. Gandhi also noted that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill by 2019. “After listening to today’s address, it felt like the BJP has always been the champion of women’s reservation. However, they kept on saying that they don’t need the credit,” says Priyanka Gandhi.
