Bengal Muslims to Shun Beef This Eid, But... The imam of Kolkata’s iconic Nakhoda Mosque has issued a public appeal ahead of Id-ul-Zoha (Bakreid), urging Muslims to refrain from cow sacrifice. Maulana Mohammad Shafiq Qasmi suggested that devotees opt for goats instead of cows for sacrifice. Qasmi said Muslims should be mindful of social harmony and avoid actions that could hurt sentiments in a diverse society. His remarks come amid the West Bengal BJP government’s recent introduction of new animal slaughter guidelines, under which animals must now obtain a “fit certificate” before being slaughtered.
