Edit videos in the Genuin SDK
See which editing tools the Genuin camera gives members on each platform, what each tool does, and which effects come from Brand Control Center instead.
Members edit a post between recording it and publishing it, on the camera's preview and post screens. The editor ships inside the Camera module, com.begenuin:camera on Android and GenuinCamera on iOS, at version 2.1.5. It has no API: your app can't add, remove, or restyle tools, and the tools need no setup beyond the module itself.
This page lists each tool with its options and limits. To install the module, see Camera and video creation in the Genuin SDK, which also lists recording limits. For the camera, microphone, and photo library declarations, see Request camera, microphone, and photo library permissions.
Smart crop, styled captions, background music, AI images, and transitions aren't SDK tools. Brand Control Center applies them when your team imports videos under Activity > Import Videos. See Effects that aren't in the SDK.

React Native 3.0.3 doesn't include the Camera module, so its members can't record or edit new posts. Flutter 1.0.1 pins the older native SDKs: the Android 1.1.9.3 library contains the same editor screens, and the iOS 1.1.9.1 framework wasn't checked for this page. Web SDK 2.0.6 has no creation screens. On the web, members post from your community site, whose Create page offers trimming and a cover frame.
Trim and arrange clips
A post is one or more clips, recorded in the camera or imported from the gallery. Before publishing, members open the clip editor to:
- Trim each clip on a strip of frames.
- Drag clips into a new order.
- Delete a clip or retake it.
- Add another clip, while the post is under the 300-second limit.
On Android, the trimmer won't accept a post shorter than 4 seconds. Clips join with hard cuts, in the order shown. For every recording and length limit, see Camera and video creation in the Genuin SDK.
Add text
Members add text boxes on top of the video and drag them into place. Each box has its own font, colour, background, alignment, and size.
| Option | Values (Android and iOS) |
|---|---|
| Font | Inter Extra Bold, Inter Extra Bold Italic, Bebas Neue, Courier Prime Bold, Scope One, Lora Bold, Varela Round, Nunito Extra Bold |
| Colour | 15 swatches: white, grey, black, blue, and 11 more from #3594F0 to #34513B |
| Background | None, white, or black |
| Alignment | Left, centre, or right |
| Size | A slider; on Android it runs from 20 to 40 sp, with 25 sp as the default |
The fonts ship inside the Camera module. On iOS, setFontsConfig changes the fonts of the SDK's own interface, not this list.
Add stickers
The sticker button opens GIPHY's picker with four tabs: Recents, Stickers, Text (animated words), and Emoji. The picker has no tab for full-frame GIFs. Members drag each sticker into place on the video.
The SDK uses Genuin's own GIPHY key, so you don't register with GIPHY. You can't filter the catalogue or turn the picker off.
Add questions and links
Question overlay. In a group that runs questions and answers, the camera shows the group's question on the video. Members can edit the question before they record their answer.
Link card. When a member shares a link into the camera, the SDK renders a preview card of the page and places it on the video as a draggable layer. Links added on the post screen with Add link appear as link-outs on the published post instead.
Choose a cover
Members scrub through the finished video and pick one frame as the cover. The cover comes only from the video's own frames; neither platform accepts an uploaded image. Owners can pick a different frame later, as described in Edit after posting.
Transcripts for audio posts
When a member records audio only, the SDK turns the recording into text that they can place on the post.
| Android 2.1.5 | iOS 2.1.5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | A speech model inside the Camera module, with an English vocabulary | Apple's speech recognition |
| Permission | RECORD_AUDIO only | NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription and the member's consent |
| Result | White text placed on the video | A text layer on the video that the member can edit |
Without speech recognition on iOS, the recording still posts, with no transcript.
Edit after posting
The post's owner can open Edit post on a published video and change three things: the description, the cover frame, and the links. On Android, the description holds up to 2,000 characters.
Everything placed on the video is burned into the uploaded file. Text, stickers, question overlays, link cards, and clip edits can't change after posting; the owner deletes the post and records it again.
Save a copy
The download button on the preview screen saves the post as an MP4 in the device's gallery. The saved copy isn't identical to the post:
- It carries a watermark while the video plays.
- It ends with a closing card that shows the creator's profile picture, username, name, and bio, adding about 3 seconds.
- A photo reply becomes a 5-second video.
Saving asks for photo library access on iOS and, on Android 9 and earlier, for storage access.
Effects that aren't in the SDK
These effects are Brand Control Center import options, not SDK editor tools. Here's what the SDK does instead.
| Effect | What the 2.1.5 SDK does instead |
|---|---|
| Clip long videos into short ones | Members trim their own clips, up to 300 seconds per post. Clipping long recordings is the Clip It import in Brand Control Center. |
| Smart crop | The SDK fits each clip inside the portrait frame and pads the empty space. It never crops a post. |
| AI captions and caption styles | The editor adds no captions. When your brand turns on transcript sharing, viewers open a server-made transcript of a published video from the CC button and can share lines from it. |
| Background music | Posts keep the sound recorded with each clip. There's no music library. |
| AI images | There's no image generator. The AI module creates communities and groups; its avatar-video flow is switched off in 2.1.5 on both platforms. |
| Transitions | Clips join with hard cuts. The only transition is the one into the closing card of a saved copy. |
| Clickbait thumbnail | Members pick a cover frame. Generated thumbnails are a Brand Control Center import option. |
To apply these effects to videos your team imports, use Activity > Import Videos in Brand Control Center and choose Direct Import or Clip It.
Limitations
- No editor API: The tools, fonts, colours, and sticker catalogue are fixed in the Camera module.
- Overlays are permanent: Text, stickers, and cards are part of the uploaded video.
- Portrait output: Landscape clips are padded to fit, not cropped or rotated.
- English transcripts on Android: The on-device model recognises English vocabulary.
- No editor on the web or in React Native 3.0.3: Neither ships the Camera module.
