The Delhi government is conducting its first-ever cloud-seeding trial in a bid to induce artificial rainfall and combat the capital’s worsening air pollution. Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the Environment Minister of Delhi, confirmed that the specially equipped aircraft currently stationed in Kanpur will take off once visibility improves and cloud-moisture conditions become favourable. The initiative, part of a wider programme co-ordinated with IIT Kanpur, aims to trigger rain over northwest Delhi to help settle particulate matter and improve air quality. If successful, the trial will mark a significant step in the city’s ongoing efforts to tackle seasonal smog and hazardous AQI levels. Officials emphasise that execution depends entirely on weather conditions today.
