“The bride’s father is also a victim.” In India’s dowry crisis, the violence does not begin and end inside the marital home. It is also sustained by the fear of “what people will say”, the shame attached to a daughter returning home, and the pressure on families to keep marriages intact even when women are asking to be rescued. From the final WhatsApp messages of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma and 24-year-old Deepika Nagar in Noida, to the 2025 case of Ridhanya in Tamil Nadu, Indian women have repeatedly sent warnings before their lives were cut short. Yet, low conviction rates, social acceptance of dowry demands, and the stigma around separation continue to trap women in violent homes. Renowned feminist historian Uma Chakravarti explains how ideas of family honour, marriage, Stridhan and Varadakshina have changed over time — and how dowry became a system of modern extortion.
