Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. This curvature can range from mild to severe and may cause the spine to resemble an "S" or a "C" shape when viewed from the back. While the exact cause of scoliosis is often unknown (known as idiopathic scoliosis), it can be associated with various factors such as genetics, neuromuscular conditions, birth defects affecting the spine, or uneven growth of the body's bones. Scoliosis is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence, with the onset typically occurring during growth spurts just before puberty. However, it can also develop in adulthood due to degenerative changes in the spine or as a result of untreated childhood scoliosis. Depending on the severity of the curvature and its potential to worsen over time, treatment options for scoliosis may include observation, bracing, physical therapy, or in more severe cases, surgery. The aim of treatment is often to prevent further progression of the curvature, alleviate symptoms, and improve spinal alignment. While scoliosis itself may not always cause symptoms, some individuals may experience back pain, muscle imbalances, reduced mobility, or uneven shoulder or hip alignment as a result of the spinal curvature. Early detection and intervention are crucial for managing scoliosis effectively and minimizing its impact on a person's quality of life. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are essential, especially for adolescents during growth periods, to monitor any progression of the condition.
