I asked Indian Express' Agriculture Editor Harish Damodaran to help me with some context to this video: West Bengal, India's second largest potato producer after Uttar Pradesh with a roughly 23% share, has had back-to-back bumper crops in the last two years. The 2025-26 crop, harvested during February-March this year, has been projected at over 14 million tonnes. That's up from 12 million tonnes in 2024-25 and 10 million tonnes the previous year. The record production, thanks to favourable weather conditions and higher acreage, had led to a price crash ahead of the ongoing West Bengal assembly elections. Prices of the tuber in the state's wholesale prices are currently averaging around Rs 7/kg, as against Rs 12 a year ago and Rs 18 at this time in 2024. Potato is mainly grown in the southern districts of Hooghly, Paschim and Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Medinipur and Bankura districts that vote on April 29.
