High drama unfolded in the Tamil Nadu Assembly after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s corruption allegations against the previous DMK regime triggered a major uproar. DMK MLAs protested Vijay’s references to an Enforcement Directorate document and demanded that the remarks be removed from the Assembly records. Speaker JCD Prabhakar rejected the demand, saying the Chief Minister had referred to information already in the public domain. The protesting MLAs continued their sloganeering and were subsequently evicted from the House by Assembly marshals. Vijay had alleged that contractors were made to pay 7.5% to 10% of contract values as “party funds” during the previous DMK government, citing an ED document. The allegations have been strongly contested by the DMK.
