At least eight people have died and over 200 have been hospitalised in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh after sewage mixed with drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area, triggering one of the city’s worst public health crises in recent years. Investigations revealed that a toilet constructed directly above a main drinking water pipeline, without a mandatory safety tank, allowed sewage to seep into the potable water supply. While residents had complained for weeks about foul-smelling and acidic water, official action followed only after deaths were reported on December 29, 2025. Indore — ranked India’s cleanest city for the eighth consecutive year — had recorded hundreds of water quality complaints in 2025, many of which remained unresolved. The crisis has now prompted suspensions of municipal officials, a three-member IAS-led inquiry, and a suo motu notice by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which has sought a detailed report from the Madhya Pradesh government.
