# Horizontal Video Player Placement

A 16:9 landscape player with a playlist rail, for in-article and desktop layouts where a vertical feed would fight the page.

The Horizontal Video Player plays clips in a wide frame, with a playlist rail that viewers move through. It fills slots that are built for width, such as desktop article bodies and leaderboards. [Maya](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/supervised-intelligence/supervised-intelligence-what-it-does-and-where-to-start#maya-genuin-s-orchestrator) ranks the clips for the page's context and the viewer, as it does in the [Vertical Video Player](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/onsite/vertical-video-player-placement).

[Octo](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/octo-operates-your-brand-control-center-octo-proposes-you-approve), Genuin's Supervised Intelligence interface in Brand Control Center (BCC), proposes this capability when it finds a fit on your sites and apps. It completes the steps under Set it up from your brand context. Nothing goes live until you approve it. It's part of [Onsite](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/onsite/onsite-what-it-does-and-where-to-start), and [Onsite contextual placements](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/onsite-contextual-placements-across-homepage-category-and-product-pages) explains how a placement takes its context from the page.

## When to use it

Use it for long-form embeds, desktop article bodies, help centers, and product demo pages. It also fills any 728 × 90 or 970 × 250 carousel slot.

| Slot | Declared size | Footprint on the page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| In-article | 336 × 280 | 340 × 284 |
| Leaderboard carousel | 728 × 90 | 732 × 94 |
| Billboard carousel | 970 × 250 | 974 × 254 |
| Grid or carousel layout | Fluid | Container width + 4 |

## How it works

- The placement sits on a page type in your [Hierarchical Grid](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/the-hierarchical-grid-one-spine-for-inventory-layout-and-reporting), with a landscape size from the table above.
- The card adds 2 px of padding outside its declared size. Reserve the footprint, not the declared size, to avoid layout shift, as the [Player card sizes and IAB footprint spec](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/player-card-sizes-and-iab-footprint-spec) describes.
- The placement allows Shorts, Shoppable, or both. Maya picks between the allowed experiences for each viewer, and switching never changes the embed snippet.
- Studio's [Adaptation](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/studio/adaptation) re-cuts your published vertical clips to landscape automatically, for this player and its sizes.
- Each page type uses a carousel or an inline layout.

## Set it up

Octo proposes the placement with these steps already done. You review the result and confirm it.

1. Register a placement on the page type with a landscape size: 336 × 280, 728 × 90, 970 × 250, or fluid. Learn how in [Register your placements on the Hierarchical Grid](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/register-placements).
2. Allow Shorts or Shoppable on the placement, and set its player to horizontal. Learn how in [Pick your first player experience](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/pick-player-experience).
3. Choose the carousel or inline layout for each page type under **Control** > **Feed settings**. Learn how in [Player Controls and Feed Settings](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/control/player-controls-and-feed-settings).

## Settings

| Setting | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Player | Horizontal |
| Layout | Carousel or inline, per page type |
| Experiences | Shorts, Shoppable, or both |
| Landscape clips | Re-cut from vertical clips by Adaptation, automatically |

Change the layout per page type in [Player Controls and Feed Settings](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/control/player-controls-and-feed-settings), without code. In the Web SDK, the layout comes from the placement's style in Brand Control Center, so a layout change needs no change to your site.

## What it reports

**Reports** > **Onsite** shows the same engagement measures as the vertical player, plus playlist depth. [Measure engagement](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/measure-engagement-watch-time-lift-and-cohorts) explains how each one is counted.

- **Watch time per user per minute**: the engagement metric Maya is measured on.
- **Completion**: the share of plays that reach 90 percent.
- **Follows**: follows per thousand views.
- **Playlist depth**: how far a viewer moves through the playlist rail.
- **Lift**: the change against the placement's holdout, set in [Placement Experiments and Holdouts](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/onsite/placement-experiments-and-holdouts).

## Add it to your site

The Web SDK renders this placement today. [Add a Genuin placement to your website](https://begenuin.com/developers/developer-resources/sdk/how-do-you-configure-the-genuin-web-sdk-placement-on-your-website) covers the placement and style IDs, and [Embed the Genuin Web SDK on your website](https://begenuin.com/developers/developer-resources/sdk/how-do-you-embed-and-configure-the-genuin-web-sdk-on-your-website) covers loading the script. [Customize the Genuin video player](https://begenuin.com/developers/browse-by-products/control/how-does-a-brand-customize-the-genuin-video-player-controls) sets sizes, tile layouts, and the profile menu.

The placement calls in the [Business Account API](https://begenuin.com/developers/get-started/any-business/business-account-api-provisioning-oauth-and-the-resource-map) are proposed, not live. [Live API today and the Business Account API roadmap](https://begenuin.com/developers/developer-resources/guides/live-api-today-and-the-business-account-api-roadmap) maps what you can call now to what's planned.
